Pakistan’s all-rounder and captain of the Karachi Kings franchise in the upcoming Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 Imad Wasim, in an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan on Wednesday, claimed that there was no problem between him and the national team captain Babar Azam.

The 31-year-old claimed that both cricketers offered each other advice and shared a good relationship.

“Our preparations are going great. We are practicing and playing games as well. We played a match today as well. So we are happy that the players have started performing,” he said. “Obviously Babar Azam is number-one in the world rankings while Mohammad Amir is a great bowler but it depends on the players performances on the day. Whoever performs on the day is the most vital. T20 is a format where you have to play aggressively and you have no other option.”

Imad praised the legendary former pacer Wasim Akram, the president of the franchise, for his big impact on the team.

“He [Wasim Akram] has had a big impact on the team. The way he has served the game and the way he understands it, I think there aren’t any who get it better than him. We learn from him and we constantly seek their advice,” he said. “I have been with the new coaching staff for only a few days. They know all the players and the PSL itself. They have an attacking mindset which will give Karachi Kings the much-needed boost.”

The all-rounder expressed sadness over the Kings’ inability to make it to the final of the PSL in the past, but claimed that this new-look team could prove to be the difference.

“It was really unfortunate to not make it into the final the last time. It is a part and parcel of the game. This time it is a very different side,” he said. “We are very excited to play in front of our home crowds. Pakistan is our home but Karachi has a special place in our hearts. The way that the people of Karachi shower us with love, we are yet to repay them by winning the title or reaching the final. I don’t think most fans support their teams as much as our fans support us. We will try to put on a good show for them and will work hard to not let them down.”

Imad believed that all teams in the upcoming HBL PSL were stacked with talented players who could win matches for their teams.

“In the draft we discussed how all teams are very equal in terms of talent. They all have great batsmen and bowlers. It is very hard to name just one. I can honestly say that all teams in the tournament are very good,” he concluded.

Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele, who has not played since November, has suffered a serious hamstring tear on his return to training.

The France international, 22, pulled out of training on Monday.

The club said tests have revealed “a complete proximal hamstring tear in his right thigh”.

Dembele was making his comeback from a muscle injury in his right thigh sustained against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on 27 November.

Barcelona added they would shortly decide “on the treatment to be followed for his recovery”.

Dembele has suffered several injuries in both legs since joining Barcelona from Dortmund in 2017.

He has played only three full games for the La Liga champions this season and has missed 63 games in all competitions at Barcelona due to injury.

France team-mate Kylian Mbappe posted a message for Dembele on Twitter, saying: “My brother, I know for you it must be a lot and that it becomes unbearable, but you must remain strong despite everything.

“Of course it is easier said than done but I will always be there to support you and I know you will come back to amaze us.”

Kim Clijsters, 36, who is starting her second comeback to professional tennis in Dubai next week, will not have an easy return, as she was handed a first-round tie against world number eight Kiki Bertens in Saturday’s draw. Clijsters, a Belgian mother-of-three, joked in Dubai that she was not receiving the full support of her family. “My son Jack is hoping I’ll lose early, so I’ll be home soon,” she told Belgian media. Bertens, 28, said earlier this year in a column for the BBC that “although I never really enjoyed watching tennis when I was young, Kim Clijsters was my role model”.

“I think it would be nice if I could play against her one day. I don’t know how I’d feel if that happened, but of course I’d want to beat her,” the Dutch player continued.

Clijsters, a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, has not competed on Tour since the 2012 US Open.

She retired for the first time in May 2007 and returned in August 2009 after the birth of her first child Jada. She went on to reclaim the number one ranking and win three more majors. Since retiring for a second time she has had sons, Jack and Blake.

She had initially scheduled her comeback for January to compete in the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, which she won in 2011.

But a knee injury forced her to change plans. She said that her first tournament would be in Monterrey, Mexico in March before bringing the date forward to the hard-court tournament in Dubai.

“There have been a few bumps but looking forward to returning to the match court,” she tweeted.

She told Belgian media this week that “things were going well in training” but added “I need matches the most”.

The tennis world in general has welcomed Clijsters’ return, even though in Belgium, some people are questioning her ability to return to the top level.

“After so many years, it’s the explosiveness that’s the hardest to catch up with,” said compatriot Justine Henin, who won seven Grand Slam titles.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters lost her first match in her second tennis comeback on Monday following a 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) defeat to Garbine Muguruza in the opening round of the WTA event in Dubai. Former world number one Clijsters, 36, had been out for seven years before the clash with world ranked 16 Muguruza, who reached the final of the Australian Open last month. Spain’s two-time Grand Slam winner Muguruza will play one of Veronika Kudermetova and Dayana Yastremska in the next round after having to fight off a determined Clijsters in a tight second set following a simple first.

“I’ve seen her play when I started on the tour, she’s an incredible player,” Muguruza said of Clijsters.

“I was excited to be the first (opponent of the comeback). She played very well, especially in the second set.

“At the end. It was very tight. It was a fun match to play.

“I’m sure she’s going to get better and better, for sure she give me a lot of trouble. She played really well after all these years (away).”

Ninth seed Muguruza, 10 years younger than Clijsters, dominated early on as the veteran Belgian played her first official match since the 2012 US Open.

Mother of three Clijsters, who was playing in Dubai for the first time in her career, was on the back foot from the start, losing serve in the first game of both sets.

She found herself a two breaks down early in the second set after being swept aside in the first but fought back gamely to lead 5-4 after nine games.

However Muguruza took the set to a tie-break and emerged victorious with a service winner on her second match point after nearly an hour and three-quarters on court.

Earlier, Ons Jabeur beat Alison Riske 7-6 (7/3), 1-6, 6-3 to earn a second-round date with top seed Simona Halep.

Tunisian Jabeur, ranked 45 in the world, saw off American Riske amid passionate home support for a player who trains in Dubai.

“I’m so grateful for the crowd, they really gave me energy. It feels like home here,” said Jabeur.

“Alison is tough, she made me run everywhere, I was down in the second set but got it back in the third,” added the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final last month at the Australian Open.

Barbora Strycova turned a corner after a poor start this season as she defeated US teenager Amanda Anisimova 7-6 (7/3), 2-6, 6-4, winning only her second match of 2020.

The 18-year-old Anisimova managed 43 winners but was weighed down by 67 unforced errors in a struggle lasting just over two-and-a-half hours.

“It wasn’t really a great match from both sides, the balls were flying everywhere, it was a struggle to keep them on the court,” the 33-year-old Strycova said.

“But I got through the match and I’m happy to be in the second round.”

Strycova will face the winner between Su-Wei Hsieh and eighth-seed Petra Martic.

Spanish champions Barcelona have been granted special permission by La Liga to make an emergency signing outside of the transfer window.

The decision comes after French forward Ousmane Dembele was ruled out for six months with a serious hamstring injury.

La Liga rules allow clubs to apply to make new signings if a player is ruled out for more than five months.

Those players must be a free agent or already playing in Spain and they can not play in Uefa competition.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez was ruled out for four months in early January with a knee injury, before Dembele suffered a serious hamstring tear on his return to training in February.

Barcelona submitted a medical report to the Spanish top flight, whose medical commission reviewed Dembele’s injury and subsequently authorised the club’s request.

Dembele has suffered several injuries in both legs since joining Barcelona from Dortmund in 2017 and has played only three full games this season.

Quique Setien’s Barcelona are second in La Liga, one point behind leaders Real Madrid.

Barcelona have denied hiring a firm to produce disparaging social media posts aimed at its own players such as Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique.

A radio station claim Barcelona wanted to protect the reputation of president Josep Maria Bartomeu and damage the image of those who disagreed with him.

SER Catalunya said the club worked with a company “that creates opinion” on social media accounts to achieve that.

But Barcelona say they “roundly deny any relationship” with the accounts.

“The club demands an immediate rectification of the information published and reserves the right to exercise legal action against those who continue to implicate the club in such practices,” a statement added.

It says through these accounts attacks were made on Messi, Pique, former manager Pep Guardiola, ex-players Xavi and Carles Puyol and some of Bartomeu’s presidential rivals.

The podcast claims Barcelona found the posts “necessary to preserve the reputation of the president and the brand”.

In response, Barcelona say I3 Ventures is a service provider to the club but “has no relationship with the accounts mentioned and, if any relationship were to come to light, the club would immediately end their contractual agreement and bring about any necessary legal action to defend their interests”.

It added: “As such, FC Barcelona confirm it has services contracted relating to the monitoring of social media with the aim of analysing both positive and negative messages about the organisation itself.”

Barcelona says the “protection of this reputation is a fundamental element and responsibility for those who work for the organisation”.
